John Oliver Reveals The Real Theme Of The 2016 GOP Convention

The real theme of the “mismanaged shit-show” that was the Republican National Convention wasn’t policies based on facts.

“It was a four-day exercise in emphasizing feelings over facts,” John Oliver said on Sunday.

After claiming the RNC was the “most apocalyptic thing” to ever happen to Cleveland, the  “Last Week Tonight” host tried to “figure out what the fuck just happened.”

He played clips showing various convention speakers saying they felt the country was in a bad spot, people did not feel safe and the economy feels stuck.

“What do you mean it feels stuck? The economy is about numbers, feelings are supposed to be irrelevant,” Oliver said, adding the emotional theme reached its apex in Donald Trump’s terrifying acceptance speech which was “light on concrete policy but heavy on provoking strong emotions.”

Check it out in the clip above.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Dial Up The Frequency Of Love — It’s All Good

2016-07-22-1469207541-594798-11780058_10153129790107149_3221575478209974355_o.jpg

“The world has gone crazy!”

“People have lost their minds!”

“It’s not a safe place!”

“The world is going to hell in a hand basket!”

SO.MUCH.FEAR.

How about instead of getting sucked up into that vortex, we dial up the frequency of Love?

Yes, there is a lot of upheaval, chaos, if you will. And instead of trying to control it and being afraid of it, we can look at it for what it is:

The perfect unfolding in which many blessings lie. The new paradigm emerging as the old ones crumble.

It’s all good.

Fear, scarcity and lack are not sustainable anymore. That’s why it’s showing up more than ever. It’s fighting for it’s last breath. It’s always been there – all the horrors that are happening around the world – we just know where it lives now.

It’s in our face.

Why?

Because we are waking up!

I learned that in space when light expands and hits darkness, there is initial friction when they meet before light expands some more.

So, shine on and embrace the friction, knowing that on a grander scale, everything is playing out as it should for one simple reason…

To restore balance and harmony.

Does that rub you the wrong way?

Ah, there’s the friction.

Do you want to defend the limitations of being right? After all, there’s so many stories to support why the world has gone mad. Just turn on the news, read the paper, or log in to the social networks.

Instead, dare to Love even when it seems impossible or even when it feels wrong – after all, shouldn’t we be raging when yet another act of violence has been reported across the globe? Doesn’t that show we care? So, how can we love when atrocities are happening around the world?

How can we not?

I do know from experience that Love is the most powerful frequency on the planet and it’s always there because it’s all there is. We are conduits for that frequency. We can at any moment choose to allow Love to flow through us.

Talk about true power.

Ask yourself how it feels and what it looks like to dial up the frequency of Love when, in that moment, you want to react and post away on social media the expression of your rage.

Pause and pay attention to what comes up for you.

I definitely have my reactions to what’s happening in the world and I have my feelings about it. When I’m triggered, I step away and deal with my emotions first. I allow them to show me what it is I’m really upset about.

I check in with myself before I post anything. Am I coming from a place of Love? If not, I do not post.

These are extraordinary times to be living on the planet. Extraordinary times to be choosing Love.

So no matter what’s happening around you, I dare you to dial up the frequency of Love.

And then pay attention to what happens.

Because, as a friend of mine always says, “It’s all good.”

And it is.

Reinventing a Canadian Crop As a Sweet Summer Treat

Timber. Maple Syrup. When asked of Canadian exports, you’d be forgiven if pulses didn’t also spring to mind. Yet Canadian farmers are one of the biggest producers of pulses, the edible seeds of the legume family, such as peas, chickpeas and beans. In 2014, exports were valued at over $ 3 billion, shipping to more than 150 countries around the world each year.

But why don’t Canadians make more use of this key crop in our own country?

There are many reasons why we should. Obesity rates in Canada tripled between 1985 and 2011. Pulses offer a food source that is not only high in protein and fibre, but remarkably low in fat. Furthermore, these plants require much less water and fertilizer to grow than other crops, making them a sustainable choice for farmers who wish to protect our natural resource base, and minimise agriculture’s global greenhouse gas emissions.

We believe Canadian consumers are not enticed to put more pulses on their own plates, due to a lack of product innovation. A competition that has run across the globe this year, as part of the United Nations’ International Year of Pulses, seeks to change that.

It inspired us to create BiotaGelata, a non-dairy gelato made from fermented bean milk. It has all the creaminess of a milk product, but instead of being high in fat, is high in protein. The flavours – maple walnut, dark chocolate cassis, raspberry lemonade, and passion fruit, would rival any traditional ice cream in a taste test.

2016-07-25-1469437147-343059-BiotaGelata.jpg

Not only did we want to find an innovative new use for a crop that Canada has in abundance, we wanted to create a product that would tap into the recent consumer trend towards dairy and soy alternatives. Around 16 per cent of Canadians would class themselves as lactose intolerant. That is why we have seen a rise in milks, yogurts and even ice creams that cater to this market.

However, the sugar content in alternatives can be high. BiotaGelata, on the other hand, contains less sugar than other dairy free items that often use soy as a base, as raw kidney beans contain 2.2 grams of sugar per 100 grams versus 7 grams per 100 grams for raw soybeans. The probiotics in the gelato, which are created in the fermenting process, also provide bacteria that are good for our guts. We have found that consumers are increasingly looking for this type of fermented products because it’s a healthy alternative to dairy yogurt.

This month, we took our innovation to Chicago, to the Institute of Food Technologists Expo. We pitched the product to a host of potential investors and retailers, in the hope that BiotaGelata could be coming to a freezer section near you soon.

Alberta’s agriculture is much more diverse than people realise – and we think it is time we began to make the most of it through new products Canadians can get excited about.

It’s Time to Stand Up for Truth and Intelligence

In a time when the American news media focused on reporting facts, rather than entertaining the public, iconic broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite made a comment about American values and education that seems even more powerful today. Averred Cronkite, “”[w]hatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.”

Indeed, as “the most trusted man in America” well understood, nothing is more costly to a democratic society than ignorance. We are seeing this on a daily basis today in the U.S. Much of the violence Americans are seeing is a product of ignorance, as is much of the rhetoric accepted by supporters of the GOP.

Donald Trump’s apparent ignorance about topics ranging from economics to international affairs has been well documented, but far more troubling is the ignorance of his followers, who do not appear to have the critical thinking skills or perhaps simply the reliable information necessary to see ignorance, lies, and twisted truths when they encounter them.

The fear mongering that Trump has succeeded in using to gain supporters can be successful only in a society governed not by information and intelligence, but by fear and ignorance. Unfortunately, the GOP’s leadership champions ignorance and distortion of fact.

When candidates make ridiculous claims such as Ben Carson’s publicly expressed view that the Pyramids of Giza were not tombs, but grain silos built by the Biblical son of Jacob to get ready for the famine in Genesis or when Donald Trump comments about Ted Cruz’s father on the basis of a report from the National Enquirer, it’s a symptom of deeper problems. Such comments would not be taken seriously by a public that was well informed and would be immediately refuted by party leadership, unless of course that leadership is itself stunningly ignorant or cynically willing to turn a deaf ear on the dangers of ignorance and lies in order to gain power.

Nor would these types of comments gain any traction if the news media uniformly called them out on the grounds that they lack verity. As it stands, only parts of the news media see their job as upholding truth.

The Washington Post clearly is one media outlet that recognizes its responsibility in the American democratic system. It just published a full-page editorial on the dangers of a Trump presidency. The newspaper notes that Mr. Trump’s ignorance, arrogance, and aggressiveness combined with his “politics of denigration and division” present a clear threat to the American democratic system.

This is correct, but the threat is really much more pernicious. The true danger to American democracy lies in a significant portion of the voting public that lacks the ability or information necessary to recognize what a threat Mr. Trump actually represents. Rather than drawing support, his wanton disregard for facts and open ignorance of the Constitution as noted by the Post should send a shiver through anyone invested in democracy.

Americans are faced with a very serious choice this November. In the past, whether Republican or Democrat, it has seemed clear that presidential candidates have shared a commitment to protecting the Constitution and democratic values, even if their specific ideas about how best to protect those things vary. It is not at all clear that Mr. Trump shares that commitment.

It’s a sad reality that the U.S. has arrived at this point, but we are here and it is time for those who support truth, facts, and intelligence–whether they are conservatives or liberals–to work hard to protect American democracy. The November election is nothing less than a vote on the future of that democratic system.

If we fail, and elect Mr. Trump, we face a very real possibility of paying that hefty price Walter Cronkite warned us to avoid. Whether it is through libraries, schools, or the media, there is nothing more important than ensuring that our society is well informed and able to recognize genuine threats to democracy, particularly when they come in the guise of claims to make America great again.

As a journalist, Mr. Cronkite recognized his most important job was not to entertain but to educate the public. As members of the Fourth Estate, journalists today need to, perhaps more than ever, recognized that their job is to protect democracy by informing the public. The Washington Post took this responsibility very seriously; one would hope that other news outlets follow their lead.

11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

How do you connect with people? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Alcohol Is Even Deadlier Than You Think, Study Suggests

A new study suggests that alcohol is a direct cause of cancer in several areas of the body.

The study, published Thursday in the scientific journal Addiction, consists of a major review of 10 years’ worth of studies from several organizations, including the World Cancer Research Fund, the American Institute for Cancer Research and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

And its conclusions are dire.

Nearly 6 percent of cancer deaths worldwide can be linked to alcohol, including in people who drink light to moderate amounts of alcohol, the study concludes. “From a public health perspective, alcohol is estimated to have caused approximately half a million deaths from cancer in 2012,” wrote study author Jennie Connor, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

The study determined that there is a strong link between alcohol consumption and cancer in specific areas of the body, such as the liver, colon, esophagus and female breast. There are also causal contributions in other areas such as the prostate, pancreas and skin.

How alcohol causes cancer is not deeply understood, according to the study, but it is thought to depend on the “target organ.” For example, cancers of the throat, mouth and liver can be largely attributed to a carcinogenic compound called acetaldehyde. Salivary acetaldehyde levels have been found to reach high levels when drinking.

Breast tissue is another area that seems to be particularly susceptible to alcohol.

Connor noted the United Kingdom’s Million Women Cohort study, which found that women who drank 70 to 140 grams of alcohol per week experienced a 13 percent increase in breast cancer and a 5 percent increase in total cancer compared to those who drank less than 20 grams per week.

Unfortunately, the amount you drink might not matter all that much. While heavy drinkers have a higher risk of liver, colon and laryngeal cancer than light drinkers, all drinkers have the same risk of mouth, esophagus, breast and pharynx cancer.

Connor also acknowledges that some of the studies she reviewed show that those who drink light to moderate of alcohol have a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease than abstainers.

But many epidemiologists agree that research confirms alcohol actually causes cancer, Connor wrote, while the relationship between drinking and heart disease is not as conclusive.

For example, other lifestyle factors beyond alcohol consumption ― such as a person’s healthy behavior and demographic conditions ― typically put abstainers at a higher risk than those who moderately drink. Connor cites a 2005 study that showed 27 out of 30 risk factors for cardiovascular disease were more prevalent in abstainers than moderate drinkers.

“Promotion of health benefits from drinking at moderate levels is seen increasingly as disingenuous or irrelevant in comparison to the increase in risk of a range of cancers,” she wrote in the study.

As a solution to alcohol-attributed cancer, Connor suggests everyone should reduce their alcohol consumption, not just heavy drinkers.

“Population-wide reduction in alcohol consumption will have an important effect on the incidence of [cancer], while targeting the heaviest drinkers alone has limited potential,” she wrote in the study.

However, most people today are hesitant to adapt to the facts. While the majority of the population readily accepts that smoking causes lung cancer, “alcohol’s causal role is perceived to be more complex than tobacco’s,” Connor wrote.

For this reason, simply getting people to stop drinking to prevent cancer ― as many have done in the case of smoking ― is broadly considered unacceptable.

Connor also warns of the backlash that research such as her own may receive from alcohol companies.

“There will be orchestrated attempts to discredit the science and the researchers, and to confuse the public,” she wrote. “The stakes are high for alcohol industries when there is no argument, on current evidence, for a safe level of drinking with respect to cancer.”

Ultimately, alcohol is just one of many factors that can cause cancer, but Connor’s study suggests reducing consumption or even partaking in a “dry period” as steps in the right direction to reduce your risk.

Bill Maher Reveals ’25 More Things You Don’t Know’ About Hillary Clinton

Bill Maher has been imagining what Hillary Clinton’s rivals would say in Us Weekly’s “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me,” ever since the Democratic nominee answered the magazine’s questions herself in April.

In recent weeks, the “Real Time with Bill Maher” host has poked fun at Bernie Sanders, Ted Cruz and Donald TrumpAnd this week, with the Democratic National Convention just days away, it was Clinton’s turn to be spoofed.

“We’ve done a bunch of the other candidates and we thought we’d circle back because this is her big week coming up,” Maher said Friday, before letting loose with such wisecracks as her “secret service codename is ‘Nutcracker” and she is surprised nobody’s noticed “that I’ve switched from pantsuits to space suits.”

Check out the clip above to see what else was included in the list.

Here’s how Maher previously spoofed Sanders:

This is how Maher imagined Ted Cruz would reply:

And here are Donald Trump’s fictional responses:

WATCH: Refocus (Getting Back on Track)

There are a lot of things going on that are demanding our focus – and take us away from where we can be most powerful and do the most good for ourselves and others. I hope this will help.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

The Psychological Reason Conservatives Band Together Faster Than Liberals

When Donald Trump picked the Mulan-hating, Titanic-loving gubernatorial goober Mike Pence to be his vice-presidential pick, he said that it was about “party unity.” And indeed, as the flopping of the Never Trump movement at the Republican National Convention shows, the GOP has indeed rallied around Trump — why else would Ted Cruz get booed offstage for withholding his endorsement?

It’s a fascinating display of what political psychologists have come to call “shared reality theory.” Similar to how some people need certainty more than others, researchers have found that people are more or less motivated to get their beliefs reconfirmed by the people around them. Sharing reality functions as “a sort of social glue,” University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign psychologist Chadly Stern and Stanford University researcher Robb Willer write in a new column for the Washington Post, “without which we would be unable to communicate, work in teams and achieve shared goals.” When you have a strong sense of shared reality, it helps you to come to think that your “beliefs reflect objective reality” and that they’re shared by your friends and family.

Related: If You Want Less Police Violence, Hire More Female Cops

As you may surmise by the way fans of right-wing commentator Rush Limbaugh refer to themselves as “dittoheads,” studies indicate that conservative people have a higher need for “shared reality.” Liberals, on the other hand, tend toward the opposite — rather than wanting to share the same reality with their kin, they’re more motivated to be unique, agreeing with statements like “in group activities, I’m somewhat of a nonconformist,” while conservatives are more likely to agree that it’s important to them to “see the world in a similar way” as others do. And in matters both political (abortion) and nonpolitical (coffee) conservatives are more likely to overestimate how much their beliefs match those of their fellow conservatives, while liberals underestimate how much their beliefs are like other liberals. And guess what: According to Stern’s research, people who report that they think their peers share their beliefs with them are more likely to vote.

Therein lies the difficulty of organizing liberals, which Stern and Willer compare to the “proverbial herding of cats” in their Post column. The liberal impulse to nonconformity may be what drives social progress — but it also makes it harder for the party to unify, the Democratic Party, to be precise. It’s a fascinating irony: Liberals might be theoretically more collectivist, pushing for policy that benefits the public good, but their individualism makes it harder to build a coalition. Just ask your nearest Bernie bro.

The Compassionate Mind Approach To Postnatal Depression

The Compassionate Mind Approach To Postnatal Depression

It is well-known that having a baby can be a time of joy but also one of anxiety and even depression for new mothers. Indeed it is very common for new mothers to experience a short period of distress following childbirth, often referred to as ‘baby blues’. Usually this passes quite quickly, however for more than 1 in 10 women, this distressing experience can be more prolonged. This practical self-help book based on Compassion Focused Therapy will help women to recognise some of the symptoms and, where appropriate, to normalise them, thereby alleviating their distress. It will also guide mothers-to-be and new mothers through the maze of confusing feelings that can arise. Not only will this book cover the basic experiences and symptoms associated with anxiety and depression and childbirth, an evolutionary model of why this occurs, and an outline of the basic Compassionate Mind model, it will guide the reader through a series of exercises that they can use for themselves to develop their compassionate mind and work on their difficulties.

‘Daily Show’ And Rosie O’Donnell Reveal Donald Trump’s ‘Very Very Incredible Deal’

Donald Trump likes everything bigger, so on Thursday night, as he accepted the Republican nomination for president, he didn’t have to settle for just one biography film. He got two… and that’s YUGE.

Actor Jon Voight narrated the official film shown at the Republican National Convention. Hours later, “The Daily Show” aired a much less official film, narrated by comedian and Trump opponent Rosie O’Donnell

“The Very Very Incredible Deal” is an overview of Trump’s life, including a possible explanation for his allegedly tiny hands

My Best Friend Is 20 Years Older Than Me, Here’s What I’ve Learned

My best friend is a Filipino with kids as old as me.

It also doesn’t help that she’s female and I’m male.

Now pay attention. I want you to notice what you think about this. I want you to notice what your immediate assumptions are. Do you believe me? Are you not sure? Do you think I must be lying?

Most of the time society assumes the worst.

They think we MUST be in a relationship. We MUST be hiding it from absolutely everybody. But no matter how much dirt my friends or her friends try to dig out, they still come up empty-handed every time.

That’s because there’s nothing happening.

You know what we do? We do things that normal friends would. We sit and talk. We laugh about work. We confide and trust one another. We go out. The chemistry that everyone else sees is so easily mistaken for love, but that’s just because we know each other so well.

I can’t tell you how this happened. The stars aligned and for some reason we had the perfect amount of compatibility. But if you think about it you’ll see why we’re compatible. I’m 23 and I’m very much open to everything. I want to learn from the experience of everyone.

What better way to learn about life than to talk to someone twice my age from another country? And guess what? I’ve learned more than you can ever imagine. It’s the lessons that I’ve learned from this wonderful person that have shaped my decisions for the past year.

She told me one thing, and that was to stay single and enjoy life while I can. She got married when she was 21 and wished she could’ve done things over. I’m currently out in San Francisco, writing in my blog and travelling the United States. I owe it all to her.

The bigger point is that society is too often focused on the wrong things–like age, gender, race, and background. It’s for this reason that our growth as human beings becomes stunted. We only hang out with those our age who want to party and fall in love on a whim. Why not become friends with someone older? Why not learn about the implications of a divorce and marrying early and having children?

There’s a whole wealth of experience that we’re missing out on. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Many of my friends rushed to get married before they got to travel outside of their own state. I know from my experience with my best friend that this might not always be the best plan of action.

I learned so much from her.

I learned that being 40 doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun like you’re 21. I learned that being a single parent demands a departure from how you acted before a divorce. I learned patience. I learned that there’s a point where friends become family. I learned that Filipino people have the best hospitality.

My decision to commit social suicide by being seen with a woman twice my age in public paid dividends for me that I’ll continue to reap for years to come.

Friendships can be weird, but I’m convinced that it’s the most beautiful thing human beings are capable of creating. Don’t limit yourself because of what people may think. I say, go for it.

Donald Trump Flunks Actual Sanity Test Given By Keith Olbermann

Time for some armchair psychiatry.

Sports and political commentator Keith Olbermann used the 20 items on the Hare Psychopathy Checklist ― an actual clinical tool used to help diagnose psychopathy ― to assess Donald Trump.

The results?

Well, let’s just say the GOP presidential candidate probably won’t be bragging about his YUGE numbers on this one.

Read Olbermann’s column in Vanity Fair, or watch his analysis of the test in the clip above, which was posted online by the magazine on Thursday.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

Stop The Violence And Hate: 5 Things You Can Do Now

2016-07-20-1469048933-7840592-sNEIGHBORHOODsmall.jpg

I am sure everyone reading this can agree on one thing — the violence and hate needs to stop, and it needs to stop now. I am talking about the daily violence and hatred that is going on around the world. The fire of violence is consuming us, and it seems to be a raging fire. The flames are being fanned every day, on TV, in the news, on social media, on talk radio, at the dinner tables, in the offices down the street.

The violence is committed in the name of justice, in the name of an ideology, in the name of enforcement, for revenge or to right a wrong. I am peaceful man and I will confess it hurts my heart to see such death and hated. We have so much innocent blood being shed for… what?

As novelist and humanitarian Wendall Berry once said, “Violence breeds violence. Acts of violence committed in justice or in affirmation of rights or in defense of peace do not end violence. They prepare and justify its continuation.”

So what can you do to stop it? You are just one person right? What can one person do? I think there are simple things we can all do to help stop it.

1. Start with you. As the old song said: “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” If there is to be peace, then you need to start with you by not supporting, condoning, endorsing violence in any way. I see messages on social media that say, “Well I am glad they got justice — they deserved it!” They are endorsing the murder of another human being for justice. This is not justice, it just murder. So even if you don’t commit violence yourself, don’t be the one who feeds the beast in the form of encouragement. Don’t support this kind of behavior anywhere. Make a daily commitment (not just lip service) to being kind and loving to everyone you meet and interact with. Show others in the world that kindness comes on all colors shapes and sizes. It is not going to be easy — nothing worthwhile ever is — and you are going to have days when you are tired and fail. But the next day, get dust yourself off and try again.

2. Start with your family. Teach your children to be kind, to be aware of other people feelings, to give back and to take care of others. Teach them empathy and caring and make it one of your family values. The way to change a culture is first and foremost at home first. Teach them to respect all people or all races creeds and colors. As a parent, show them through your actions how to be a kind soul. Don’t allow them to talk bad about others or to express hate. Let them know that is not how kind people act and that it is not acceptable behavior. As Nelson Mandela once said, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for loves comes more naturally to the human heart than the opposite.”

3. Start with your neighborhood. Do you know your neighbors? Reach out to them and get to know them. Be bold and knock on their door and say hi. Tell them as neighbors you need to stick together. Have a block party and get to know one another. Let them know you have their back. Take initiative and form a community association. Talk to each other. Have a community of connection and kindness. Our nation is a nation, but it is really made up of one neighborhood, and many neighborhoods make up a town, and many towns make up a state. Many states create a nation. You can’t change a nation but you can change your little pocket of the world, by creating and spreading peace and kindness in your neighborhood.

4. Start to volunteer. There are lots or people in the world that need care and help. When someone volunteers their time and energy to help someone else — hearts are healed and hatred dissipates. It’s hard to hate when you see people cares about you. I have done volunteer work with children, and I have seen the transformation power of what love can do to heal.

5. Start to listen. We need to stop being so polarized — no one wants to listen to anyone who doesn’t agree with them. In Washington DC, politicians just don’t listen to anyone on the other side of the aisle. We must start listening to other people with an open mind and trying to understand their world, their perspective. As Tennessee Williams once said, “I think hate is a feeling that can only exist where there is no understanding.”

I am asking you today in reading this to commit to being a bright and shining well of peace, good will and kindness. Let the cool and deep water of that well extinguish the flames of violence and hate.

In GOP Convention’s Shadow, Obamacare Is Paying Big Dividends

CLEVELAND ― The Republicans gathering inside the Quicken Loans Arena don’t care too much about the nitty-gritty of policy. But if there’s one substantive issue that generates passion among convention delegates and party leaders, it’s Obamacare.

They think it crushes freedom. They think it’s a handout. And they think it’s a policy disaster.

At the Neighborhood Family Practice, which serves a racially diverse, low-income area about six miles west of downtown, the clinic staff has a slightly different perspective.

For them, the Affordable Care Act isn’t an ideological abstraction, to be loved or hated for what it represents. It’s a part of their daily lives, a program that has dramatically changed the way they conduct business. And they say it’s been a godsend.

The main reason is the part of Obamacare that’s been most controversial in Ohio: the expansion of Medicaid eligibility. Republican Gov. John Kasich exercised that option over the strong objections of conservative activists and even his own Republican legislature.

Before the Affordable Care Act became law, the Medicaid program in Ohio looked like the Medicaid program in most other states back then. It was available only to certain categories of poor people, like children and pregnant women. Today, with the law in place, states receive generous federal support if they choose to drop the old restrictions and make Medicaid available to basically everybody in a household where the income falls below 133 percent of the poverty line, or $ 26,313 for a family of three.

To the surprise of many, Kasich made a passionate moral case for taking up the federal government’s offer, arguing that the state had an obligation to help those in need. He overcame the final political and legal hurdles in 2013, allowing enrollment in the expanded program to begin the following January.

Since that time, Ohio’s Medicaid rolls have swelled by more than 600,000, significantly exceeding initial projections.

Those numbers anger and frighten the program’s conservative critics, who decry the program’s cost. But the extra spending on Medicaid, most of which is coming from the federal government and not Ohio, is just one component of the Affordable Care Act ― a program that, nationwide, has cost less than anticipated and projections suggest is actually reducing the federal deficit.

Meanwhile, at clinics like the Neighborhood Family Practice, the surge in Medicaid enrollment has changed the patient mix dramatically ― and with it, the clinics’ finances.

Previously, a quarter of the people getting care at the Neighborhood Family Practice were uninsured. Now, less than one-tenth are. With so many more paying patients, the clinic has been able to increase its capacity. The number of full clinic facilities has grown, from two to five, and the organization now operates a pair of clinics in public schools as well. Patient visits have increased more than 50 percent since 2011, around the time that a pilot version of the Ohio Medicaid expansion began

But the impact isn’t just in how many people are coming to the Neighborhood Family Practice, staff say. It’s also in the kind of care they receive once they arrive.

Erick Kauffman, the clinic’s chief medical officer, said that in the old days, staff were constantly scrambling to help patients obtain medical supplies or follow-up care, whether by scrounging for free prescription samples or begging specialists to see people without insurance.

“We got good at it,” Kauffman said, “but it … really resulted in care that was substandard. You shouldn’t have to change your antidepressants every month because that’s what we happen to find in the supply closet. You shouldn’t be swapping your insulin, or waiting for a long time to get the tests you need, just because you can’t pay for them.”

Now that kind of thing happens a lot less, Kauffman said, allowing the clinic to focus more on helping its patients get better ― or keeping them from getting sick in the first place. “Instead of struggling to break even, we have a slight margin now, and we can use it to invest in programs like counseling, school-based health care, things that we couldn’t do otherwise and that will help the community,” he said.

You have people who are functional, stable citizens whose lives are falling apart … But with Medicaid they can get their lives back on track, get back to work.
Erick Kauffman of the Neighborhood Family Practice

Behavioral health is one area in which the clinic can do a lot more than it could before, thanks to newly hired therapists and, for the first time, a room dedicated exclusively to counseling and psychiatric consultations.

Wellness has been another priority. Today the clinic offers parenting training for pregnant women and new mothers, as well as classes for all patients on nutrition and cooking. The hope is to reach people with conditions like diabetes and teach them to manage their conditions better, thereby minimizing or avoiding altogether the complications that would lead to costly treatment later.

Megan Meister, director of community engagement, described one patient who had multiple chronic conditions, including diabetes, but has participated in some of the wellness initiatives and come in for regular preventive care. According to Meister, the patient’s blood glucose levels and weight are both down. “So she’s taking less medication, and she’s less likely to go to the ER. That saves taxpayers money.”

Anecdotes like that obviously don’t prove that better preventive care and other benefits of Medicaid expansion will actually reduce what the government, or society as a whole, spends on health care. Past efforts along those lines have frequently been fruitless. But an assessment of an early version of Medicaid expansion in Ohio suggested that, if patients are part of an integrated system with clinics and hospitals, spending more upfront to keep people healthy ends up costing no more money, and maybe a little less, over the long run.

Medicaid expansion’s effects on the people who enroll is less ambiguous. Conservative critics like to point out that many specialists won’t take Medicaid patients, because the reimbursement levels are so low. Some critics have even argued that, overall, Medicaid leaves people worse off than if they had no insurance at all. But research has shown that the program, despite its real flaws, leaves people better off financially and, possibly, healthier as well.

That research on Medicaid comes from all over the country, with the most influential new studies arriving from Massachusetts and Oregon. As for Ohio, Kauffman said, patients certainly appear to be better off ― particularly those middle-aged patients who, prior to expansion, would lose coverage and have no way to regain it before Medicare kicked in.

“You have people in their 50s or 60s,” Kauffman explained. “They fell out of the workforce ― maybe they didn’t keep up their skills or they got bad knees, though not bad enough to get disability [insurance]. … You have people who are functional, stable citizens whose lives are falling apart. It’s heartbreaking. But with Medicaid they can get their lives back on track, get back to work.”

Melania Trump’s Claims She Graduated From College Are About As Credible As Her Speech Last Night

Melania Trump’s professional biography says the wife of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump began modeling at age 16, but she only began working full-time after obtaining a degree. She graduated “in design and architecture at University in Slovenia,” according to the bio as of Monday night:

It’s a good story, but it doesn’t appear to be true.

Melania Trump never earned a university degree in architecture ― she dropped out of college after her freshman year, according to her biographers.  Still, she claims to have a degree from “university in Slovenia.”

Questions about her education grew more significant Tuesday morning, following the revelation that Melania Trump plagiarized parts of her speech to the Republican National Convention from one that First Lady Michelle Obama gave in 2008.

That revelation on Monday raised the question of whether there was anything else Melania Trump hadn’t been entirely truthful about.

Slovenian journalists Bojan Pozar and Igor Omerza wrote in their biography on the former fashion model that she “became ― and remained ― a college dropout” after leaving the University of Ljubljana’s architecture school following her freshman year.

Below is their account of this period of her life in the book, Melania Trump ― The Inside Story: From a Slovenian Communist Village to the White House:

In her freshman year, the 19-year old Melanija Knavs attended lectures on the following subjects: elements of architecture, fine arts, fundamentals of technical mechanics, architectural construction, descriptive geometry, mathematics, and an ideological (read “communist”) elective credit called “General Partisan Resistance and Social Self-protection”. Melanija would have made it to her sophomore year, even having failed 2 exams, but she was supposed to have gotten and held a 1-month internship and kept a journal about it.

******

Later, in America, after meeting Donald Trump and officially becoming his partner, Melania Knauss told the media that she got her degree in architecture and design. This was almost certainly done in consultation with Trump and his advisors, as they were desperate to give off the impression that the Slovenian model was not just beautiful, but also smart and well-educated.

A spokeswoman for the Trump campaign declined to comment early Tuesday on Melania Trump’s claim that she has a university degree.

He’s Not A White Knight — He’s A Human Being

Society says:

Men are not allowed to be weak.

Men do not feel as deeply as women.

Men do not have emotional attachments to sex.

Men are fearless and courageous.

Men are here to save the day, the damsel and the world!

Today I am throwing my hands up in the air and saying e-nough!

With thoughts and stigmas like this, relationships are doomed before they even start.
It’s time we put an end to the emotional imprisonment of men.

Unless we stop seeing our men through a distorted lens, we will always feel disappointed and as if he’s not enough.

Ladies, he’s not a White Knight, he’s a human being. He’s not perfect; he’s flawed. Just as we are.

As much as the big screen likes to repeatedly demonstrate the amazing, enlightened, self-aware man rescuing the damsel at just the perfect moment, it’s a rare occurrence in real life.

For Pete’s sake, Ladies, we have to stop this nonsensical belief once and for all.

Gender Differences – Real or Not Real

There are very few gender lines I allow into my beliefs and the ones I do are mostly hormone or physiologically based. There are many books out there claiming males and females are very different and we must understand one another in order to get along.

I am publicly willing to stand in disagreement with this for many reasons. (But that’s for another blog)

At the core level, the absolute deepest level of our being, we are souls. Souls that are a magnificent balance of masculine and feminine energies. Souls that came here to experience a physical body and the material world. At our very core, we are Spirit in human form.

All of us.

We may have chosen to experience the form of male or female, but our purpose for being here is the same. We are no different from one another. We are here to learn and grow closer to our Higher Self (God-Self) while existing in human form.

When we understand we are dealing with another soul housed in a male body, we can acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation for our partner that has the capacity to heal our fractured relationships.

Giving What You Are Expecting

I absolutely believe if we lose the White Knight stigma we’ve attached to our men and start looking at them from a new perspective, relationships en masse would dramatically improve!

Although I cannot speak to all relationships as there are too many individual and unique dynamics in play, I believe those of you who were drawn to this article possess the ability to alter the state of your partnerships by viewing your man through a clearer lens.

You can start by asking yourself this question:

Am I giving to my man what I am expecting from him?

If I’ve seen it once, I’ve seen it a hundred times. Women expecting to be nurtured, supported, caressed, complimented, made passionate love to (and the list goes on), but they’re unwilling to do those things for their man.

Somewhere along the way they chose to believe it’s the man’s job, not theirs.

By putting such lopsided expectations are on our men, we create an atmosphere of perpetual lack and resentment.

Frankly, you are putting the entire relationship in the hands of your partner and by golly, that’s an incredible burden for anyone to bear!

Ladies, he can show up for you. He can hold your hand. He can love you and respect you, but you have an equally important role in the relationship’s success.

No one person can nurture the relationship alone. Happy, healthy relationships require both parties equally contributing to the healing and becoming of their partner.

What He’s Not Saying

In my past, I had the belief that the man was supposed to fill the cracks of my broken heart. That my heart was the only fragile one in the room and the right man would know exactly how to make me feel safe and loved.

I was left disappointed every time until one day I looked deeper into the eyes and soul of the person I was putting my expectations on.

I discovered he was just as afraid as I was and his heart equally as fragile.

My entire life changed when I began to view men from a different perspective.

I started to see what the men in my life were not saying rather than what they were saying. I saw their fears and I heard their inaudible cries for love. I didn’t tell them what I saw, I simply began approaching interactions with them differently – with love rather than expectation.

The responses that came were remarkable. Softness replaced hardness. Kindness replaced anger. Gratitude replaced bitterness. Appreciation replaced expectation.

It was a miracle.

2016-07-18-1468873875-7792811-whiteknight2.PNG

Your man needs your love, attention, support, understanding and encouragement as much as you need it from him. He has his own store of false beliefs and fears just as you do. He is not exempt from the human experience just because he sports a penis.

Most men won’t display their needs openly as they have been taught not to.

It’s up to us to know that as human beings men experience the same emotions, fears and weaknesses as women do. If we want to experience the wonders of a reciprocally loving relationship, we need to step up and do our part.

And with this beautiful shift in perception, you will become the person he’s always needed in his life – his soft place to fall. You will become his trusted companion, the one who knows and understands him like no other.

2016-07-18-1468873812-2537940-whiteknight1.PNG

You will be the reason he becomes all that he is meant to be and the reason he will protect his kingdom at all costs.

He will become the White Knight you’ve always dreamed about simply because you love him for all that he is.

7 Reasons Why Including Protein in Your Diet is a Must

When we think about protein, images of body builders and athletes come to mind. But protein has important health benefits for everyone, not just for sports enthusiasts eager to build muscle. To understand why this nutrient is so necessary in our diets, it’s important to understand more about it.

Think back to high school science class. Proteins are molecules that make sure that our bodies’ organs and tissues function properly. They are also key components in our skin, eyes, hair, bones and nails. Proteins are made up of smaller molecules called amino acids. When we digest protein, the amino acids are what’s left. These units then rebuild new proteins in our bodies to do all sorts of helpful things.

2016-07-19-1468916996-5061015-protein.jpg

Here are 7 reasons to add protein into your diet:

1. Builds and Sustains Muscle Mass
Protein is crucial for building muscle mass and maintaining it. It also supports ligaments, tendons, and other body tissue. Eating protein before and after exercise is said to help increase muscle recovery and to treat muscle aches. When a diet isn’t rich enough in amino acids (remember, the smaller units that make up protein), your muscles can weaken and wither because the muscle fibers are breaking down to be used to support your body’s energy needs.

2. Promotes Brain Function and Learning
Proteins are needed to make hormones, enzymes, and neurotransmitters that are critical for cognitive function. The brain requires a steady supply of amino acids in order to keep up levels of concentration, focus and energy. When there is a lack of amino acid in the body, learning and coordination can suffer until they are replenished in the diet.

3. Keeps Blood Sugar Levels Stable
Unlike foods high in sugar and carbs, eating protein-rich foods has a marginal effect on blood glucose levels. In fact, protein slows down the absorption of sugar during a meal. So, a high-protein diet can help prevent jumps in blood glucose. This is important in preventing type 2 diabetes and for helping to balance energy levels and stabilizing your mood and appetite.

4. Helps Lift Your Mood
Certain amino acids found in protein-rich foods are needed to balance hormones naturally. They also naturally help control your mood and keep anxiety at bay. Proteins help neurotransmitters (the brain chemicals that communicate information throughout our brain and body) function. They also create those hormones that are responsible for keeping us calm and positive. People lacking essential amino acids may experience moodiness, weakness, increased anxiety or signs of depression.

5. Helps Manage Weight
Research shows that eating foods high in protein make you feel full for longer periods of time, something that does not happen with high-carb and fatty foods. This satiation prevents overeating and snacking.

6. Boosts Heart Health

Replacing high-carb foods with protein may help lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Studies show that higher protein diets balance blood sugar and tend to help prevent obesity, diabetes and ills associated with heart disease.

8. Slows Aging

Protein helps the body produce an antioxidant called glutathione. This “master antioxidant” is found within our cells and helps us to reduce the carcinogens that age us. A deficiency in glutathione can contribute to oxidative stress, which adds to age-related diseases like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, sickle cell anemia, liver disease, cystic fibrosis, viral infections and cancer.

A protein-filled diet from whole nutrient-rich foods has been shown to heal broken bones, avert bone weakness, especially during aging, and prevent fractures. This happens by increasing calcium absorption, which helps with bone metabolism. Also, a diet high in essential amino acids found in protein-rich foods can help maintain high cognitive and immune function.

Eating Protein Daily

Just about every part of our bodies uses protein on a daily basis to develop and function. As protein is constantly being broken down, we constantly need to replace it. This means incorporating high-protein foods into our diets to support a healthy, strong, balanced body. Doing so will also keep memory sharp, energy levels up and moods positive. So whether you prefer your protein in the form of meat, fish, cheese, tofu, beans, lentils, yogurt, eggs, or nuts, eat up!

John Oliver Announces His Endorsements For This Election Season

John Oliver just announced his endorsements for the upcoming election. But it’s more of a what, rather than a who, that he’s backing.

After running through the public figures who’ve offered support to presumptive presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in recent days, the “Last Week Tonight” host said he was ready for his own pronouncement.

But not for president of course,” he said in a web exclusive clip posted online Sunday. “Because of my accent, the only elected officials I can endorse are prime ministers, viceroys and magical railway controllers.”

Oliver went on to explain that he was fully behind a quirky list of concepts ― including animals wearing human clothing, interspecies friendships and the 1999 movie “Pushing Tin.”

Check it out in the clip above.

Understanding: Wants Vs. Needs

2016-07-15-1468611389-7532558-shutterstock_449670994.jpg

Wants vs Needs

How often do we create mountains out of molehills? We should start by defining our needs and our wants. What qualifies as a need? What is a want?

A need is something you have to do. A want is something you would like to do. I often confuse them. There are days when I take my needs for granted and sacrifice them at the expense of my wants.

Let me start with some examples:

My medications
My bedtime
Work projects
Parenting time with my kids
Paying my bills
Weeding my property
Exercising
Following my food plan

… The list goes on.

I used to think all of these were needs. And as you can see by the list, they don’t all seem reasonable to complete in a day. As a result, I would improperly prioritize those items I felt would yield the largest gain or results.

I focused on growing my business, because if my business was successful, everything else would fall into order behind it (or so I thought). But I didn’t realize that neglecting myself and my actual needs was a serious issue. I believed I was too busy to get the rest of the list done.

Since embracing mindful thinking, I have been able to accomplish everything on the list, and more. I realized that the more time I found for myself, the more time I had for everyone else.

Waking up this morning, I immediately centered myself with gratitude, spirituality and mindfulness. This week, I took my medications daily and made sure that my bedtime was consistent. Everything else today is a by-product of those good behaviors and habits. I naturally had time and energy to follow my food plan. (I even found time to walk a few miles while working and ride my exercise bike today.)

After that, I was able to spend time with my kids: watching their shows before and after dinner, reading to them before they went to sleep, and hearing something good from each of them regarding their days.

The one thing I didn’t have time for today was beating myself up or playing the victim. Was I perfect in my quest today? No. My inboxes aren’t empty. Yet. They are smaller than they were yesterday and I found acceptance about not requiring them to be empty each and every day.

The reality is that an empty inbox is a want – not a need. Realizing this allowed me to focus more of my time on my needs and less on my wants. An amazing thing happened…I found the time I needed for my wants because my needs were being taken care of at the exact same time.

Don’t let perfect ruin good! And don’t let good ruin doing something!

I used to let the desire for perfection paralyze me and prevent me from moving forward. The perception that I could not work on my wants until all my needs were perfectly satisfied was crippling; the only thing I ever did perfectly was nothing.

Since then, I have learned that the only ‘right’ way to do something is to get moving. In meditation, gratitude, and spiritual practice something is always better than nothing!

Get Your Family Off The Couch This Summer With These 5 Simple Tips

Summer is the perfect time for the entire family to refresh their focus on healthy habits. The kids are out of school, camps are back in session, and even the coldest, snowiest parts of the country are rebuilding relationships with the sun. But with all the freedom that summer brings, it can be easy to fall into a routine of sitting on couches, watching television and overeating.

The best defense against letting idle relaxation become your summer routine? Structure. Incorporating a mix of season-savoring activities, adventures and changes of scenery into your schedule can help you and your family stay healthy and active all summer long. Need a head start? Here are five ideas I love, coupled with important advice from like-minded friends of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation.

1. Jump in the water.
family sprinkler
Whether it’s in a lake, a pool or even with a hose in the yard, cooling down with a splash of H20 is an American pastime that’s fun for all ages. Plus, swimming is a great aerobic exercise that will help with your aches and pains. But remember to be safe, too, the water safety advocacy group the ZAC Foundation advises. An adult should always supervise a child in or around water. If you’re in a group, appoint designated “water watchers” to keep an eye on swimmers in 15-minute intervals with no distractions.

2. Hike a trail.
Looking for an activity that can last you either an hour or an entire day? Hit the local trails! The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy recommends families pack a bag of essentials, like liquids, snacks, sunscreen, maybe even a ball to toss around, and lace up some comfortable shoes. Want to speed things up a bit? Strap on some rollerblades or hop on a bike (wear a helmet!) and experience the outdoors with a breeze in your face. Great exercise and great fun. Win, win!

3. Go outside.
family basketball
The possibilities are endless when you take a step outside with an open mind. Set up a neighborhood game of kickball. Draw on the sidewalk with chalk. Set up an obstacle course. Go for a run. There is no better way to enjoy summer than by playing outside. But, as the Road Runners Club of America says, remember to be smart in the heat. If you become dizzy or nauseated, have the chills or cease to sweat, find shade and drink fluids. But if you keep your safety in mind throughout the day, you’ll be in for hours of fun!

4. Create a family-wide fitness challenge.
Set a physical activity goal for each member of your family. Whether you’re doing five situps or 10 pushups a day, create a chart that holds everyone accountable. To make the competition more “interesting,” the childhood obesity educators at The OrganWise Guys recommend that each family member select a reward (non-food!) ahead of time, and the family can then motivate and compete to reach individual goals by the end of the month. A little friendly competition never hurt anyone!

5. Share family meals.
outdoor meal
At the cornerstone of family time, there is usually a tasty meal. Eating together as a family has been shown time and again to offer a variety of health benefits. And, according to Healthy Dining Finder, it doesn’t have to be fancy, it doesn’t have to be dinner and it doesn’t have to be at the dining room table! Whatever shape it takes for your family, the act of sharing a meal together is the priority.

What are some of your favorite summer activities?

Trump Plans To Steal The Spotlight Back With Cabinet Announcements

WASHINGTON ― Frustrated at the lack of enthusiasm for his vice presidential pick Mike Pence, Donald Trump is now telling those close to him that he wants a do-over of sorts, which he aims to get by rolling out the names of potential cabinet members, a source who spoke to Trump told The Huffington Post.

Trump was disappointed with the rollout of Pence, and the reaction to him, on several levels. He was first piqued that the news leaked before he’d gotten around to telling the runners-up, Newt Gingrich and Chris Christie, about his choice. He then had second thoughts, postponed the announcement and spent Thursday night trying to find a way to back out of his choice, according to multiple news reports and the source close to Trump.

Trump sees Pence as a politically safe but unexciting choice, the source said. When non-politicians fantasize about running for president, they delight in imagining the unorthodox, thrilling running mate they might choose. For Trump to have ended up paired with such a standard pol, after a year of violating every campaign norm in the book, must be a major letdown.

Multiple sources say that Trump wants to name Christie, the Republican governor of New Jersey, as his attorney general, although knowing Trump, he could change his mind at any moment. Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law who plays a major role in the campaign, fought against Christie as a VP pick, as reported this week by HuffPost blogger Laura Goldman and later corroborated elsewhere.

Retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, whom Trump at one point floated as a potential VP, will surely be on the short list for defense secretary, unless of course Kid Rock makes himself available.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

The Pioneer Plaque

“It’s a kindness that the mind can go where it wishes.” ― Ovid, “The Poems of Exile: Tristia and the Black Sea Letters”

“Language is the only homeland.” ― Czesław Miłosz

“These are all I have. I do not have the wide, bright beacon of some solid old lighthouse, guiding ships safely home, past the jagged rocks. I only have these little glimmers that flicker and then go out.” ― Rebecca Wells, “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood”

The Silent Languages

It is Day Two of one of my headaches, which usually last for three. It is morning, and I am in bed, my head wrapped in a black-and-white Yasser Arafat scarf, one forearm pressed hard against my skull and the other resting on my husband’s chest.

It is on this latter arm that the jazz musician with whom I live is “playing,” with the fingers of one hand, a tune. A silent tune, as my skinny forearm is no trumpet.

Dean knows that, while the pain in my left temple is relentless, language–of any sort–will tempt me out of the hole down which pain thrusts me. Eventually, I will have to know . . . what tune he is playing. Eventually, the language which he speaks so fluently, and hears constantly within his cranium, and which I can only hear (and then, imperfectly), when a band performs it, will charm me (as the flute, the cobra).

“What are you playing?” I ask, eventually.

He smiles and, in his endearing falsetto, pipes a bar or two. “‘Spring is Here,'” he interjects.

“By?”

“Rodgers and Hart. Stan Kenton.”

“So, I have an entire orchestra playing here? On my arm?”

The fingers are onto something else, however. “Now, what?”

“‘Yesterdays.’ By Kern and Harbach. Stan Kenton again, though.”

Not skipping a beat, he begins ‘Stompin’ At The Savoy.’

Lying here, in almost total silence, one of us speaking through the fingers of a hand, the other listening, clumsily, through the skin of a forearm, we are something like the members of two early, isolated tribes of homo sapiens, upon first contact. I will never have time enough to learn the language-of-jazz in which my spouse has been steeped since early childhood. And, by this point in our marriage, I know he will never learn the proper use of “went” and “gone”: his participles will remain, for this grammarian, blood-curdling, lo, unto the grave, whichever of us arrives there first.

“I’ve never went to . . .” says Dean.

“Gone to!” says Elizabeth. “Gone!*&%”

When one of us is in pain, in the little co-mingled tribe that is this marriage, the silent languages predominate: those comprising simply sounds, as opposed to words; those expressed through touch.

Throughout my husband’s surgery of a month ago, and my own headaches, we have spoken, for the most part, without a lot of words. In fact, because I myself am so beset and beleaguered by words, living with a musician, who communicates primarily and happily and by choice via sounds alone, most of those sounds mediated by instruments (and, so, at a remove of one or two from the human breath or the human hand, or both), I have found being with Dean a relief, a refuge.

In our house, there is much music, but most of it comes without lyrics.

Which is not to say we do not communicate profoundly. We communicate, with all our various languages, signs, and signals, across most silences and distances. But we speak best, usually, without words.

What, I wonder, did Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis “say,” upon first encountering one another, over 100,000 years ago, somewhere in the Middle East? What was communicated in that first gaze?

In the way that we “use” language, and considering the languages we have chosen to learn well, even over the short course of our shared time on the planet, my husband and I could be members of different species. Here, we have an instance of Homo trumpetensis taking up residence with Homo comma-oxfordensis
.
No wonder one of us seems always to have a headache (she said, smiling).

Lost in Translation: “Saudade” & “Hiraeth”

We are losing human languages, year by year, as we lose the last native speakers of each.

Languages go extinct with their speakers, unless studied, recorded, and preserved for prosperity, and many, many human languages (I think, just, of all the extinct aboriginal languages of Australia) were gone before . . . we knew it. In this new century, with the death of their last-standing native speakers, we have lost Klallam, Linvonian, the Cromarty dialect of Scots, and Pazeh, along with at least 14 other distinct tongues.

Tongues: given my husband’s (and Koko the gorilla’s]) fluent fingers, tongues and breath are not essential for communication, but most languages may still be called tongues.

Language has ever been based on breath. And tongues. Both human.

And, with every year, and every year of globalization, the tongues we speak decline in number. Soon, we will be left with what, which? Chinese? Spanish? English? Hindi? And, then? Just Chinese?

I grieve the loss of all tongues for, in and through each, we have expressed what is almost impossible to express in others.

There is one, solitary Portuguese word, saudade, for example, which originated in Galician, and for which English (and perhaps all other languages) has no twin, no cognate (or “blood relative”).

Saudade (as per Wikipedia) “describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return. A stronger form of saudade might be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost lover, or a family member who has gone missing, moved away, separated, or died. Saudade was once described as ‘the love that remains’ after someone is gone.

Saudade is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, well-being, which now triggers the senses and makes one live again. It can be described as an emptiness, like someone (e.g., one’s children, parents, sibling, grandparents, friends, pets) or something (e.g., places, things one used to do in childhood, or other activities performed in the past) that should be there in a particular moment but is missing, and the individual feels this absence. It brings sad and happy feelings all together, sadness for missing and happiness for having experienced the feeling.

“In Portuguese, Tenho saudades tuas(European Portuguese) or Tenho saudades de você (Brazilian Portuguese), translates as ‘I have saudade of you,’ meaning ‘I miss you,’ but carries a much stronger tone. In fact, one can have saudade of someone whom one is with, but have some feeling of loss towards the past or the future.

“In Brazil, the Day of Saudade is officially celebrated on 30 January.”

I, myself, “have saudade of” the lost languages of Klallam, Linvonian, the Cromarty dialect of Scots, and Pazeh, along with the other 14 tongues which have gone extinct since the year 2000. I have saudade, as well, of all those lost languages whose names I will never even know.

For me, in a sense, every day is The Day of Saudade.

And then, there is the Welsh word hiraeth. Wikipedia: “The University of Wales, Lampeter, attempts to define it as homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed. It is a mix of longing, yearning, nostalgia, wistfulness, or an earnest desire for the Wales of the past.

“Oxford and Merriam-Webster define hiraeth as: (noun) ‘a homesickness for a home you cannot return to, or that never was.’

If this sounds familiar: “Hiraeth bears considerable similarities with the Portuguese concept of saudade (a key theme in Fado music), Brazilian Portuguese banzo (more related to homesickness), Turkish gurbet, Galician morriña, Romanian dor.”

So, whatever language we speak, or no longer speak, we Homo sapiens, trumpetensis, and/or comma-oxfordensis, have coined a plethora of words with which to express À la recherche du temps perdu.

Extinction is a concept with which we have long been acquainted, but with which we are never, ever, comfortable.

Breath & Dragon’s Breath

Recently, in my ongoing, Oedipal, and Conradian quest to nail down just when and through what mechanism runaway climate change will effect the Sixth Extinction, a planetary cataclysm resembling the great Permian die-off, in which fully 83 percent of Earth’s genera went extinct, I came across a long, peer-reviewed article by marine biologist Dr. Ronald L. Shimek, former chair of the Biology Department at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, assistant director of the Bamfield Marine Science Centre on Vancouver Island, Canada, and a “CORAL Magazine” senior editor. (The version of the essay which I cite here, and which is available online is this one: http://www.reef2rainforest.com/2016/04/22/dragon-watch/)

Dr. Shimek, while researching coral reef extinctions, one of his areas of expertise, stumbled upon the research of Dr. Natalia E. Shakhova, “a Russian oceanographer and geologist who has been studying the permafrost methane distribution throughout the offshore region of the Laptev Sea known as the Eastern Siberian Arctic Shelf (or ESAS in scientific circles) and the adjacent onshore areas.”

Shakhova’s research has been in another neck of our shared woods, entirely, from that of Shimek. Her focus is the release of methane into the atmosphere, and the probability that the next great planetary extinction will be caused by a catastrophic release of the gas also known as “Dragon’s Breath.”

Quoting from Shimek’s piece: “[Shakhova] estimates the [methane] clathrate deposits in the ESAS to be between hundreds and thousands of gigatons. This is not easy to visualize, but the total mass of carbon in living plants and animals on Earth has been estimated at 500 gigatons, making these buried deposits of solidified methane unimaginably huge in the true sense of the word. Some observers have dubbed the collective, buried power of these deposits the ‘Methane Dragon.'”

Shimek continues: “In 2010, Shakhova and her co-workers estimated that a catastrophic methane release in excess of 50 gigatons (a minuscule percentage of what is in that area) is possible at any time. She said, and continues to assert, that such a catastrophic release could take place over a period of one to ten years. The fear is not the potential explosive effect–terrifying caribou in the wild, barren north–but rather the massive infusion of enormous clouds of potent greenhouse gas into Earth’s atmosphere. As a result of her work, the question that needs to be asked is this: ‘Are her estimates of catastrophic release reasonable and possible? And, if they are, what difference would that make?'”

Shimek concludes his essay (and what can I really do but quote him at length?): “When and how things might unfold is profoundly uncertain, but the trigger point for the short-term catastrophic methane release postulated by Dr. Shakhova could be a temperature rise as low as an additional 1.5°C or as high as an additional 10°C. These are not the rantings of fearmongers, but scenarios described by respected Arctic oceanographers. The 50-gigaton decadal methane pulse scenario posited by Shakhova, Semiletov, and Alekseev, who are probably the leading experts on Arctic methane and methane ices, is considered plausible by scientists at the UK Meteorology Office, as well as multiple scientific reviews, including one written by more than 20 Arctic specialists. Current Arctic atmospheric methane concentrations are unprecedented, but the best minds believe that if 50 Gt were added to the atmosphere, conditions would become very bad, very fast. It would be, some experts fear, the beginning of ‘runaway global warming’ that humans would be powerless to stop.

“Given an effective meltdown of methane clathrates in the Arctic, climate expert Dr. Malcolm Light has estimated global temperatures of around 50°C above averages between the years 2040 and 2050. In summer, if the normal average had been 30°C (for example, where I live in Montana), the post-methane belch temperature would rise to 80°C or 176°F.

“While the timing is unclear, the consequences can be predicted with some certainty. They include: Complete melting of polar ice caps; global flooding; Disruption of global ocean currents and gyres; demise of oceanic fisheries; Crop and food production failures; Spread of disease and parasites; Collapse of power grids and transportation systems; Mass human mortality in heat and cold waves; Catastrophic breakdowns in political, economic, and societal stability.”

Shimek concludes: “There is no easy way to write these words: Should such an event occur, it is certain that the coral reefs I set out to research would have no chance of survival. More to the point, most of us would perish.”

While We Have Breath

Other scientists believe all of us will perish, and the event will occur before the end of the current century. Day by day, I review the science, and it seems, to me, incontrovertible. The Sixth Extinction, the one brought about by mankind, will occur in the lifetime of our grandchildren, and it will snuff out every last creature “with breath,” and most without, on our shared planet.

If I, with my small knowledge of science, know this truth to be self-evident, how long will it take my peers in “The Reading West” to surpass me in my researches? I would like to think that many, many of us will come “online” with the science rapidly, and turn global attention to what appears to be just ahead for us all.

In thinking out loud about extinction here, I have begun with the extinction of languages but, perhaps just after my own sojourn on the planet ends, and the small extinction my death will signify, language itself will become extinct along with any being who parsed, or will ever parse, language.

Based upon and an expression of the consciousness of Homo sapiens (and Homo sapiens‘ forebears), language–the concept, the thing itself–will disappear with us, as though it, and we, never were.

Floating through space on the wings of Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecrafts were, are, the so-called Pioneer plaques, humankind’s early-1970s “messages in a bottle” to the universe. If and when they are “received,” and if ever they are “understood” by other beings–a possibility so remote as to defy all probability–perhaps someone, somewhere, in some dimension, may know that we lived and breathed: but the likelihood of our still being here then appears nil.

The enormity of that realization is now being pondered by relatively few homo sapiens, but will affect each and every one of us, whether we choose to inform ourselves, or not.

And many of us–the current ponderers–believe the time has long since passed when we might have avoided the iceberg, or the dragon’s breath. The time now is for pondering alone. For facing the music as we can.

Readers still with me here may want to explore the writings of Dr. Guy McPherson and, perhaps, join me on Facebook in the (closed) group, Near Term Human Extinction Support Group.

We who speak and breathe and touch and sing now face the end of humankind’s tenure on Earth, and we will together be choosing how we face it; not if, or when.

While I have breath, and while I may be heard, I will continue saying, “Choose. Choose how we go forward. Choose together.”

We have no other choices left us, we who coined the words saudade and hiraeth.

How To Sleep When Horrific News Becomes The Norm

Last night more than 260 civilians were killed in violent clashes with military forces in Istanbul.

The night before, at least 84 people lost their lives when a truck deliberately zigzagged through crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France.

Two weeks ago Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were shot and killed by police and five police officers were gunned down by a sniper. The previous month, 49 people were killed by a shooter at an iconic gay nightclub in Orlando.

And scores of other shootingsbombings and tragedies have happened in the days and hours in between.

We heard the stories. We saw the pictures. We watched terror happen on video.

Mothersfatherssonsdaughtersloverscolleaguesfriends and the man from down the street who “would have gave you the shirt off his back” lost their lives.

For victims’ loved ones, the grief is immeasurable. For African-Americans, the pain of watching police brutality against black people comes with a toll of its own. For people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, the hurt of an attack against their own community is agonizing.

People intimately affected by these tragedies experience emotions that others of us cannot fathom.

But even for those without a personal connection to these terrible events, sadness and pain are still a reality.

We feel pain even if we’re not involved

If you see, hear or even read about something traumatic ― even if you’re not directly involved ― you can still have an emotional response, Robert Hawkins, an associate professor at the Silver School of Social Work at New York University, told The Huffington Post.

“This is trauma that doesn’t necessarily happen to you or you didn’t necessarily experience, but you become affected by it,” he said.

It can be worse if you identify with those affected, explained David Kaplan, chief professional officer at the American Counseling Association.

“If you relate to the person who was attacked in any way, you’re going to grieve because it’s also part of you,” Kaplan told HuffPost previously.

But that grief, while normal and expected, can lead to stress and sleeplessness.

“With the frequency of shootings and terror attacks there is a sense of anxiety that’s building in people,” Anita Gadhia-Smith, a psychologist in Washington, D.C., told The New York Times ― “a sense of vulnerability and powerlessness.”

Traumatic life events are among the biggest causes of anxiety and depression, research suggests. But experts say taking steps to care for yourself ― including taking care of your sleep ― is what helps you cope best with that stress.

Stress causes chemical changes in our bodies

Not sleeping is the body’s natural response after hearing about and watching disturbing events, according to sleep psychologist Jason Ong of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

When the body releases stress hormones, the emotion-processing areas of the brain stay on, suppressing some of its sleep-promoting systems, he said. Even though your body knows you’re tired, your brain knows something is wrong and you need to deal with it.

The bottom line: research shows that when we’re stressed, the chemical and biological changes in our bodies can interfere with our sleep.

That stress and sleeplessness is important to address early, experts say, before it leads to long-term cycles of mental health problems and chronic insomnias (which can grow from cycles of short-term insomnias).

“Anxiety and insomnia can feed each other and become a cycle,” the National Sleep Foundation says.

Here are seven self-care tips that can help you deal with worries and sleep better:

1. Talk about what’s bothering you

A big part of dealing with a tragedy is expressing your emotions, said Steve Orma, a clinical psychologist and author of Stop Worrying and Go to Sleep: How to Put Insomnia to Bed for Good. “If you’re sad, allow yourself to cry. If you’re anxious and afraid, say ‘I’m anxious and afraid,’” he previously told HuffPost.

If you’re sad, allow yourself to cry. If you’re anxious and afraid, say ‘I’m anxious and afraid.’
Steve Orma, clinical psychologist

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration recommends that you talk to family and friends about how you’re feeling.

2. Do things that help you relax

Relaxation and meditation techniques help ease stress and can be especially helpful before bed, said Phyllis Zee, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

3. Don’t change your sleep routines

Losing sleep at night might make that snooze button more tempting. But picking up poor sleep habits just makes it harder for you to fall asleep at night, Orma said.

If you’re not a regular nap-taker, don’t start. Avoid sleeping in later than usual. And don’t suddenly start taking sleep medications because you may grow dependent on them, he said.

4. Turn off the news at night

Leave a news-free buffer of at least 30 to 45 minutes before you try to sleep to allow yourself to relax, Ong said. Limiting your exposure to media coverage of violence will help you relax and sleep better.

5. Practice good sleep hygiene

It might sound obvious, but it’s worth noting that the times that you’re more likely to have trouble sleeping are when it’s most important to do the things that are good for sleep, Zee said. Exercise during the day, but not too close to bedtime. Get some sun during the day, but avoid bright lighter later at night (which can make it harder for you to fall asleep and actually make you sleep worse).

6. Give yourself a break

You need to tell yourself it’s ok to have a few nights of poor sleep, Orma said. The more you beat yourself up for not sleeping well and the more upset you get about it, the more anxious you can become about not sleeping and fuel the sleepless cycle.

Talk to yourself like you were talking to your best friend or a child… in a very nurturing, supportive or positive way.
Steve Orma, clinical psychologist

“Talk to yourself like you were talking to your best friend or a child. You would talk in a very nurturing, supportive or positive way,” Orma told HuffPost previously. “You wouldn’t freak them out.”

7. Get the help you need

If coping on your own or with your family members is not enough, talk to a psychologist or licensed medical health professional, recommends the American Psychological Association.

While there is no one timeline that fits everyone for how long it should take for a trauma to subside, the APA says you might benefit from seeking professional help if you feel overwhelmed by sadness or helplessness, if the problem doesn’t seem to be getting better after talking with family and friends or if you find it difficult to maintain your everyday routine.

Letters On The Promise Of Living

Letters On The Promise Of Living

Through the use of letters, “Letters on The Promise of Living”, shares the wisdom and principles that can lead to a meaningful and purposeful life. The center core of the letters is the six great philosophical questions. What is truth? What is beauty? What is justice? What is liberty? What is equality? What is goodness? In addition, questions of happiness, meaning, relationships, courage, sadness and suffering, and others comprise corollary letters. As Socrates said, “an unexamined life is not worth living”. These letters are designed to help the reader with that examination. From the time we are born until the time we die, we all search for the meaning of life. What is life about? As children we observe, learn and grow and expand our worldly horizons and our knowledge about the universe and ourselves. We all want to become wise in how we live life and find meaning. Wisdom based on sound principles carries an obligation to live a life of purpose guided by virtues and marked by honorable behavior. “Letters on the Promise of Living” provides insight into the great philosophical questions and values that will help people lead a principled life — — a good life, well-lived. The book offers several important things: A conversation in letter form about the great questions of life; those things we all ponder and confront as we live our lives. These great principles and ideas form the bedrock of our values and behavior. A means to understand the great ideas upon which our soci

Rapper Pitbull Dubs Donald Trump’s Presidential Campaign ‘A Joke’

Pitbull showed no love for Donald Trump when asked if he was backing the presumptive GOP presidential candidate.

I think the (Trump) campaign is a joke to be honest with you,” the Cuban-American rapper said while being honored with a star plaque on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles on Friday.

“I think that it’s unfortunate the way we’re being viewed around the world due to some people’s approaches,” he added.

His comments came following a recent Vanity Fair article in which the music star talked about a previous meeting with Trump.

I like to sit down with people and see what they’ve got going on, and if there’s anybody that’s fallen down and got back up… with all the bankruptcies he’s been through—well, you have to respect certain things about him,” he was quoted as saying.

Some people reportedly interpreted that “respect” to mean that he may be backing Trump ― despite Pitbull previously saying he wouldn’t be able to stay at the businessman’s hotels following his comments on Mexican immigrants.

But on Friday the 35-year-old, real name Armando Christian Pérez, further made it crystal clear he wouldn’t be endorsing The Donald for office. Am I supporting Donald Trump?” he said. “No I am not supporting Donald Trump. You all know this already very well.”

Watch the full Pitbull interview here:

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

My Love Letter To You

2016-07-15-1468620026-5807673-1400415_10154064214148711_917411793151883215_o.jpg

Thank you for the love letter. Thank you for the lengthy text message you wrote me from a space of total vulnerability. You hit send hoping for the best as your heart rested anxiously on your sleeve awaiting my text back. Thank you for the crumpled up piece of paper that you ran to give me on the beach, leaving your lifeguard tower abandoned for a split second so as to not miss the chance to ask me out. Thank you for the ride home from yoga. I know it took a lot of guts to ask me on a date just a breath before I closed the car door shut. Your cheeks were bright red as you grasped the steering wheel. But you did it, you faced your fear and made the ask.

I may have turned you down but I didn’t ignore you and I was polite, gracious, and compassionate in my response. I realize that it’s not what you were hoping to hear but I thanked you. I thanked for your sincerity and I meant it when I said that I was humbled by the effort. I see how you show up for love and it’s the same I see in me. Believe me when I say that I know how you feel.

There was the time that I went to the other side of the country to surprise you at your concert, palms sweaty in the back of the venue as I awaited the imminent moment that I’d say, “Hi! I came to see you because I care, I’ve missed you and I really like you.” Remember when I sent you that tiny box with a gemstone in it to protect you on your travels? Or what about when I left you a flower under your windshield wiper?

I’m the not-so-secret admirer just like you.

Whenever my romantic actions result in a “turn down” I don’t let it get me down. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be bold and tear down any walls of fear that existed around being rejected. I know I did the right thing by stepping forward and diving into it.
Disappointment can last a minute but regret can last a lifetime.

When I receive your old-school love letter, your authentic compliment in line at Whole Foods, your poem and your nervous ask, know that I see and understand you. I may not say “yes” but I’ll tell you thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. It’s easy to hide behind technology as we explore our hearts that are seeking to connect but It’s not easy to show up in person. If we desire something or someone, it’s our actions that will propel us to a result. Some of the most treasured words to me are those spoken by Mahatma Gandhi,

“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”

Thank you for the love letter, the art you made me, the authentic compliment, and for asking a stranger to dinner. I hope that you’ll receive this love letter back to you:

Dear Fellow Romantic,

Please keep showing up for life like you’ve been. Don’t let a “no” or even silence jade you. It’s you who sees the rose and it’s you who gets to smell her enchanting aroma. With eyes wide open continue to see, feel and express your deep experience of the world because that will inspire others to dive into their fears instead of letting fear block destiny. The more you show up for life in full expression of your hopes and dreams, the more that life will become your dream come true. It’s the romantics that see the glass half full. So please, beautiful soul, never become jaded. Always write love letters and always be able to receive them with grace, compassion, and a warm thank you.

With Love,
Alicia

The Kind Flexitarian

2016-07-16-1468631710-5276425-1280x720Mv0.jpg

The term “flexitarian” has been coined to describe someone who eats a primarily whole food, plant-based diet, but also sneaks in a big of meat every now and again. Celebrity cookbook author and chef, Mark Bittman, uses this term, and has recently moved away from a meat-centric diet. His new schtick is that he’s strictly vegan all day long, and in the evening he eats whatever he wants. I find this a little odd from a health perspective because if you’re going to toss a big grass-fed steak down your gullet, you’re much better off eating it at lunch time when your body has the rest of the day to digest it/work it off. But moving on from the Mark Bittman (who I love), I’m seeing flexitarians cropping up everywhere here in LA – almost as many as the Paleo crowd. And both groups of “health conscious” eaters are eating meat – in the case of Paleo’s, a LOT of meat. However, are they really “conscious”?

I personally choose not to eat animal flesh. I totally used to. Actually, I include a bunch of meat recipes in my second book (The Gorgeously Green Diet 2009), and do a deep dive into the benefits of truly grass-fed (as opposed to grass-finished) meat. But over the past 5 years I’ve changed. I’ve realized that I don’t need to eat animal flesh to be healthy, and that in many ways I am healthier, stronger, and more energetic without. I’ve also become a way more “conscious” eater in that I really think long and hard about how every mouthful is produced, and in the case of animals, I just couldn’t deny that fact that animal welfare doesn’t get taken into consideration 99.9% of the time (even when it’s implied that it does). I don’t call myself a vegan, because it’s a label (not a big fan of labels), and I do (very occasionally) eat a little fish.

I am totally NON-JUDGEMENTAL of people who enjoy eating meat, so if you are one of them, please don’t stop reading. My entire family are meat-eaters, and so I’ve learned to live and let live. I’m also not opposed to handling or cooking meat for those who must eat it – like my 15 year-old daughter who says she will NEVER not eat meat. It’s kind of the reverse of the many teens who, much to their parent’s consternation, suddenly go vegan. Since I’m a total health nut, my daughter delights in seeing my reaction to her tucking into a box of Fruity Pebbles (not the Whole Foods healthy version either).

But my reason for writing this post about a kind flexitarian is because I was invited to a private screening of the recently released film, At The Fork. It’s a beautifully crafted documentary about exactly how animals are raised for human consumption in America. It is non-judgmental, sensitive, and deep – really DEEP. The filmmaker/director John Papola is a meat-eater, and his wife, Lisa, is not. The film opens with John’s family tearing into huge racks of beef ribs, hot off the grill – an annual family tradition. His wife loads her plate with veggies. Husband and wife make clear their individual stances on meat-eating, and off they go to explore how our meat is produced.

I brought my meat-eating (only about once a week if that, cos I’m hard on his case), husband to the screening. After the film we stayed to participate in the panel, where John Mackey, the CEO of Whole Foods Market (who was involved in the film), sat with the director and producers to answer questions. We then went out for a fantastic vegan meal!!!

So, what was my main takeaway? The film made me cry a number of times. They feature a lot of pigs. I love pigs, and because I was raised around them, I know that they are highly intelligent. The film also made me laugh – there were some beautiful and very funny moments. Unlike so many of the meat-bashing documentaries out there (designed to turn everyone in vegans overnight), this film doesn’t bash anyone over the head. The director John, is brazenly honest, and openly discusses his struggle about forgetting the suffering he might have just witnessed at an appalling factory farm, once a few days have gone by – and especially when faced with the smell of a delicious burger or steak on the grill. His wife is devastated by the fact that he seems not to have the same lasting sense of compassion as she does – and this conflict runs throughout the film. I like that it’s not resolved either. This makes the film more appealing to a way larger audience, which is the intention. No point preaching to the choir, right?

I love the fact that Temple Grandin is in the movie throughout. She’s been a huge advocate of designing compassionate slaughterhouses – an oxymoron I KNOW, but one that she explains in great detail. If the animals are going to be killed, at least don’t put them into abject terror on their way. I think that was the most upsetting part of the film: seeing how terrified the animals were as they were separated from their herd and shoved into crowded trucks headed for the slaughterhouse. Incidentally, the director doesn’t show any animals actually being slaughtered in the movie – a wise decision because we stay watching, rather than turn away. This is not a horror movie!

The panel was very interesting. Here’s something that I didn’t know about John Mackey: He used to eat meat (and clearly sells it in his markets). But, he is now vegan. In an interview in Men’s Journal, he explains: “I became a vegan in 2003, after a woman interrupted the Whole Foods annual meeting to tell us how bad ducks were treated. We had a big argument, but then we started an email correspondence and she challenged me to learn more. That summer I probably read a dozen books on animal welfare. What shocked me the most was the phenomenon of factory farming — animals endure terrible lives of abuse and suffering — and it’s hidden away. After reading the books, I knew too much to keep eating meat. Remember The Matrix? Take the blue pill or the red pill? I didn’t want to go back to sleep.”

But he also acknowledges that only 1% of the population are vegan, so to run a viable business on the scale of Whole Foods Market, he had to continue selling meat. To this end, he has spearheaded the 5-Step Animal Welfare Standards label. He explained to us that not only does this allow customers to really understand how the animals they are buying were treated, but it also encourages animal producers to get kinder and cleaner. They can all charge top dollar for a Step 5+, so they are starting to make big changes.

This brings me to my final thought in this discourse. If you want to be a kinder flexitarian, and eat/buy meat that is good quality, and from an animal who hasn’t suffered for its entire life, you will have to pay more. Organic, humanely-reared meat is very expensive. I see this as a positive because Americans eat way too much cheap meat. This kind of mass meat consumption is linked to all the number one killer diseases, and inflicts untold suffering on the animals involved – a big LOSS for all involved. I think it’s time to open our eyes. At The Fork certainly helps pull back the curtain on the unpalatable truth. I highly recommend you try to see it. If it’s not playing near you, they will help you organize a showing for your community, school, church or neighborhood.

And, finally, why not join the their 21-day challenge. All you need do is sign up with your email, and they will send you a daily plant-based/higher welfare recipe from all kinds of celebrity chefs, as well as shopping guides, articles, and more. You can also like the At The Fork Facebook page.

I also encourage you to try some of the plethora of plant-based recipes on my blog.

There Were A Lot Of Alleged Anti-Muslim Crimes During This Year’s Ramadan

For American Muslims this year, the holy month of Ramadan ― a disciplined period of fasting, reflection and prayer ― was at times something akin to a horror show.

First, there were the persistent news stories of deadly attacks carried out in the name of Islam, which killed hundreds of people, the majority of whom were Muslims themselves.

Then there was the sadly predictable backlash in the U.S., with politicians and pundits publicly blaming a major religion and its 1.6 billion adherents for the actions of a few.

And then there was the anti-Muslim terror.

The Huffington Post, using its Islamophobia tracker, has identified at least 19 reported instances in the U.S. during Ramadan, from June 4 to July 6, in which Muslims were allegedly targeted because of their faith. These include cases of harassment, threats, vandalism and violence.

    Below is a partial list:

Fuck Muslims,” a man allegedly said before shooting and wounding two Muslim men in Minnesota.

We know where you are, we know your location… We will come at the right time,” read a threatening email to a mosque in Orlando, Florida.

You fucking Muslims. I heard you’re here to conquer us,” a man allegedly told an imam in Staten Island, New York, before picking up a pipe and threatening to kill the imam and “all Muslims.”

Leave now before it is too late,” read another threatening email to the Islamic Society of North America headquarters in Indiana, where members had discovered bullet holes in the building’s sign a week earlier.

We must execute the Muslim scum. Full on eradication,” read a tweet directed at a mosque in Michigan.

Take your rag ass back to your country. I’m gonna fucking kill you,” a man in a truck allegedly screamed before attempting to run a Muslim man off a Texas road.

You are Muslim and not welcome,” read a note left for a family of Syrian refugees in Arizona. “Please move before danger can happen.”

A man brandishing a gun “told people at [the Masjid Al-Madina in Raeford, North Carolina] that he would kill them and bury them behind the mosque,” Capt. John Kivett of the local sheriff’s office said.

Too many targets to count,” wrote an armed Seattle man on Facebook, vowing to “take revenge” on Muslims at a mosque there.

The word “ISIS” and a swastika were carved into a Muslim woman’s car in Lynnwood, Washington.

“Fuck Muzlim” and “terroist” were spray-painted on a Muslim man’s car in Palmdale, California. The car’s windows were also smashed in.

Two Islamic centers in the Chicago area received threats

Get the hell out of the country you bitch ass Muslims!” a woman allegedly screamed at a Muslim mother and daughter during a road rage incident in Maryland.

A man ran into an Ohio mosque during a prayer service screaming “Jesus is Lord!” before attempting to steal a phone when a member of the mosque tried to call the police.

And Muslim men were viciously beaten outside mosques in Orlando, the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn, New York.

Hours after Ramadan ended, someone also opened fire on a mosque in Texas, hitting the building multiple times and shattering the glass front door. Thankfully, no one was injured.

“Given these incidents, many [Muslims] are understandably fearful to go to their houses of worship,” Jordan Denari Duffner, a research fellow at Georgetown University’s Bridge Initiative, a multi-year project studying Islamophobia, told HuffPost in an email. “And this is a shame in a country where freedom of religion is supposed to be a basic right.”

“As a Catholic, I can’t imagine what it would be like to find my church vandalized or shot at during the lead up to Christmas, or to learn that in many places around the country, people who share my faith were beaten up outside their place of prayer,” Duffner continued. “It would be extremely frightening. This is the reality American Muslims are living with.”

HuffPost identified 200 news stories of anti-Muslim violence, aggression, discrimination, rhetoric and policy in the first six months of 2016.

report released earlier this year by the Bridge Initiative found that there were more acts of anti-Muslim violence and vandalism in 2015 than in any year since the Sept. 11 attacks ― likely due in part to the constant and broad demonization of Muslims from Republican presidential candidates, most notably Donald Trump, the presumptive nominee.

Another report this year, from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, found 78 instances in 2015 in which mosques were targeted for vandalism, arson and other types of destruction, up from 20 such instances the year before.

Similarly, hate crimes targeting Muslims tripled in the month after the terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, while Trump and other political figures were ratcheting up their anti-Muslim remarks.

That kind of angry, paranoid, divisive political speech was everywhere during this year’s Ramadan.

After the terror attack in Orlando, in which a man who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State militant group killed 49 people at a gay nightclub, Trump called for surveillance of mosques and the racial profiling of Muslims. He also said that Muslims don’t assimilate into American culture. (They do.)

Meanwhile, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) invited an anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist to testify before Congress; Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) claimed that Muslims “want to kill every homosexual in the U.S.”; a Republican congressional candidate named Joe Kaufman wrote that “every radical Muslim institution” needs to be shut down, but offered no plan for distinguishing “radical” groups from non-radical ones; Oklahoma state Rep. Pat Ownbey (R) said he wasn’t sure if the First Amendment protects Islam; Fredy Burgos, a member of Virginia’s Republican State Central Committee, called Islam “a death cult organized by Satan”; and Matthew Jansen, a Trump delegate in Pennsylvania, said Islam “is not only godless but pagan.”

“Many American Muslims noted that the passing of Muhammad Ali allowed space for a rare, positive conversation about Islam in America,” said Corey Sayor, the director of CAIR’s department to monitor and combat Islamophobia.

“Unfortunately, that was erased by one deeply disturbed individual murdering innocent people in Florida,” Sayor went on. “Many Muslims have expressed frustration over this reality to me, but in each instance I see a resilience that inspires them to continue to push back against both Islamophobes and violent extremists.”

And these efforts might be working.

I am hurt but I have faith.
Rowaida Abdelaziz, HuffPost social media editor

Despite the anti-Muslim fearmongering from politicians and the persistence of anti-Muslim crimes, a recent poll shows ― as a Politico headline put it ― an encouraging “backlash against the Muslim backlash.”

The poll, from the Brookings Institution, found that 62 percent of Americans had a favorable view of Muslims, a 9 percent jump from November, when a University of Maryland poll found that only 53 percent of Americans had a favorable view of Muslims.

Similarly, 44 percent of Americans had a favorable view of Islam, a 7 percent jump from November.

“I am hurt but I have faith,” HuffPost social media editor Rowaida Abdelaziz wrote on July 5, one day before the end of Ramadan and Eid, the celebratory breaking of the fast. “Ramadan has not only allowed me to push through these tough times, but it has given me the solitude I needed to see that hope. It gave me the strength, even for just a moment, to continue to push past the hateful comments from bigots on my feed, the heartbreaking news globally and in the U.S., and the deafening silence that comes with it all.”

“Tonight we bid Ramadan farewell,” she added. “And celebrate Eid with hope.”

Even the Lone Ranger Had Tonto

The current presidential race got me thinking about what truly makes a strong, powerful and trusted leader in the world. For the purposes of this blog, let’s leave opinionating about the candidates’ abilities at the moment up to CNN, FOX NEWS, and Saturday Night Live. Instead, let’s focus on your leadership abilities. On how you become a leader in your own life, at work, at home, in the classroom, and in your community.

Why? Because great leaders inspire change.

I decided to do a little research and find out what people think great leadership consists of. I discovered that not everyone has the same list; and, in fact, I’ve been getting a little flack for how “intense” and demanding my definition is. However, everything special or extraordinary I ever produced in my life came on the heels of a dare or overcoming some sort of fear, so what the heck, I dare you to define leadership as boldly as I do, and then go for it.

    WHAT MAKES A GREAT LEADER?

    1. You have a defined purpose. Your vision is locked into your gut. You know who you are and what you want to say.
    2. You walk your talk.
    3. You talk and talk. You want to be heard and followed.
    4. Your mission is for a higher purpose.
    5. You set an example. In other words, you put yourself through something to turn your ordinary into extraordinary, publicly.
    6. You are transparent. You don’t hide things. People are allowed to know you, warts and all.
    7. You master your own mind and keep excuses at bay.

So, are you living your true mission? Do you know people like this? Sure, it’s a stringent, impressive and not easily achievable list. Except, if you’ve got any interest like me in its pursuit, I’ve put together a few pointers below for you to ponder as you step up and into being a powerful, purposeful leader in your life.

    BUTCHER YOUR CHICKEN

Being a leader means people will look at you, watch you more closely and yes, judge you. There is no way around it. Many of us are fearful of being judged and thus manage what we say. You cannot be a chicken and a great leader at the same time. If you are afraid of being judged or worried about what people think about you, you will never be proud and confident in your life.

Do note, if you are judging your bosses, spiritual leaders or yoga teachers, it probably means you want their job and think you could do it better, but are too chicken to admit it. Because we know how strongly we judge, we fear being judged by others. Know you are going to be judged and busy yourself with setting standards that YOU want to meet and then meeting them.

    OWN YOUR CRAP

Now, we all make mistakes and have negative qualities. It’s hard for anyone to admit when he or she is wrong, but it’s especially hard when you are the leader and you have to admit it up and down the pecking order, or in front of everyone. At our company, we make telling on ourselves a common practice, but it’s still hot-in-the-face-worthy work. And, we recognize how unique this culture is to be so inviting and forgiving. In most communities, admitting you’ve been a jerk is a big risk and pride prevents you from doing it, even if it would be the quickest way to resolve conflict, upgrade a system and/or improve your ability to lead.

A while back, I told a coworker that I thought I could do something better than she could. It turned out I was wrong. Now, as long as I didn’t own that “truth” or tell anyone, I still believed I could do it better. I’m sure you can imagine how much I did not want to admit out loud that disgusting judgment. But I did!

Whenever I own my crap or cop to something, as soon as I say it out loud, its validity is now in question and communication, leadership and affinity can be restored. Once it’s vocalized, it’s as if something about the words meeting with the air changes it (like iron oxidizing into rust) and it becomes absurd. We can all get back to work and I can go back to leading, not from on a high horse and being above others, but from a place grounded in my own integrity. I know I’m not perfect, and as a leader, I made the promise to always look for my weaknesses and mistakes and own them.

Telling the truth and owning what doesn’t work about you, keeps you trustworthy and safe to those around you.

EVEN THE LONE RANGER HAD TONTO

Great leaders are not controlling or ‘Lone Rangers.” They know when to ask for help and delegate. They are team players who let others rise up around them. I can be a baby at this level of leadership. I like trying to do everything myself, but it never works out for me. I end up getting overwhelmed, start dropping balls and people stop trusting me. I now have promises about delegating tasks to employees and communicating when I need help. This brings the team closer together and has people trust me more.

    Love
    Laurie

What Research Says About Which Decisions We Regret The Most

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Therese Huston is a cognitive psychologist at Seattle University and author of How Women Decide: What’s True, What’s Not, and What Strategies Spark the Best Choices, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (2016).

Imagine this scenario, adapted from the book Stumbling on Happiness by Harvard University psychologist Daniel Gilbert. You’re going through some old boxes, and you find a bundle of savings bonds that your grandma purchased for you when you were a child. You think about cashing in some of them and investing them in Company A, but you’re busy and never get around to it. You learn two years later that if you had invested in Company A, you’d be $ 1,000 richer.

Now imagine a second scenario. You find some forgotten savings bonds from your grandma tucked away in a box. You decide to cash them in and invest the money in Company B. Two years later, you learn that if you had just left them alone to continue collecting dust and interest, you’d be $ 1,000 richer.

In both scenarios, you made a mistake. The question is, which mistake causes you greater regret in the long run? Research by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky shows that most of us, nine out of ten, expect to feel more regret in the second scenario, when we invested badly. No one wants to look or feel like a fool, and foolish action seems much worse than foolish laziness. Most of us would rather be teased for being boring, for refusing to get onto the dance floor than for strutting out there and doing something embarrassing.

But here’s what’s surprising: most of us would be wrong, at least in the long term. Research study after study shows that we do have short-lived regrets for the dumb things we did, but those regrets fade quickly, usually within two weeks. But the regrets for things we didn’t do, the missed opportunities? Those last for years.

A team of researchers at Cornell University asked people in their seventies, “What would you do differently if you could live your life over?”

Some people regretted their actions: “I shouldn’t have gotten married so young,” or “I should never have taken up smoking.”

But four times as many people described things they wish they’d done, actions they wished they’d taken.

    “I should have finished college.”

“I should have aimed higher in my career.”

Or “I was too meek—I should have been more assertive.”

We think we’ll regret what we do, but most of us have bigger regrets for the things we didn’t do, when we didn’t invest our time, money, or energy.

One of my most poignant opportunities to act came about 14 years ago. I’d interviewed for a job that would require me to move across the country to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They made me a generous offer, and I had seven months before I had to pack up and leave.

There was just one problem with leaving Portland: I’d never actually lived there.

For the 2 ½ years I’d lived in the Pacific Northwest, I had lived in a cookie-cutter apartment complex in the suburbs. My neighborhood consisted of a 7-lane divided highway lined with car dealerships on one side and lumber suppliers on the other. Great for my commute, terrible for anything else. No coffee roasters, no craft breweries, no sidewalks, and certainly no mustachioed men like those you see on Portlandia. It could have been Toledo, Ohio, and you wouldn’t have known the difference.

If I wanted to leave the Pacific Northwest with no regrets, I needed to move to Portland. It was the coolest city I knew, and I’d always imagined living there. Should I have done it sooner? Probably, but now was my chance.

My work colleagues questioned my sanity. You’re moving across the country, but first, you’re moving seven miles east? For seven months? Six, actually. I had used up a month deciding.

I found a basement apartment I could afford one block off NW 23rd Street, the hippest of the hip. The apartment’s low ceiling was a maze of banging water pipes, and the tiny windows let in almost no light, but it didn’t matter. Now the streets in my neighborhood were lined with boutiques and upscale dessert shops, and people rode single-speed bikes and sat in doorways, reading books. I walked those sidewalks every day.

Was it inconvenient to upend my life twice in six months? Of course. I lost several weekends packing and unpacking boxes. I broke several fragile items in my haste; one set of hand-blown wine glasses, a gift, never made it to Pittsburgh.

Was it worth it to live in a place I’d always dreamed of? Absolutely. Not a single regret. I could replace wine glasses, but I couldn’t replace an experience.

I research decision-making, and in my interviews, people often describe the regrets looming around what they didn’t do. One woman softly described her regrets about not pursuing her first true love. She even showed me an old picture of him. Another said she regretted not negotiating her first job offer because she then felt undervalued for years. Three people said, “I regret that I didn’t leave my last job sooner.”

We regret not acting when we had the chance, or we regret waiting too long. We regret not reaching out to a sibling, not pursuing that master’s degree, or not standing up to a bully at work. We don’t have as many regrets about the things we chose to do. Our actions usually become things that were meant to be, and even our poor choices teach us something.

But why? Why don’t people have strong regrets for their actions, particularly actions that make their lives harder? Researchers believe that whenever we act, particularly when it’s a big decision such as getting married or quitting a job, we work the results of that decision into our life story and our understanding of who we are. It’s how we create meaning in our lives. I chose this, and yes, it created a real mess for me, but it also helped me become the person who stands here today.

Perhaps the most telling subject to study regret is divorce. Since divorce means a marriage has come to an end, and sometimes a costly, prolonged, and painful one at that, we might expect that divorced people regret ever getting married. What might you predict? That 75-80% of divorcees regret getting married? Maybe at least 50%? Go lower. One study of nearly 900 people who had been through a divorce found that only 39% of them regretted getting married.

Why would 6 out of 10 think a marriage that didn’t work was still a good choice? Ask a divorced friend if he regrets getting married, and he might say, “No, I have two wonderful kids,” or “I regret that we didn’t separate sooner, but I don’t regret getting married. I wouldn’t be the person I am now if it weren’t for that relationship.” As one woman said about the decision to marry her first husband, “Of course, I’d love to go back and whisper some advice into the ear of that 26-year-old, but I’m not sure I’d tell her, ‘Don’t do it.’”

Granted, we often regret our actions in the moment. You regret eating too much at dinner. You regret telling a joke if no one laughs. And plenty of people regret slipping in late for a meeting. But do they swear off tardiness forever? They may be prompt the rest of the day, but research predicts that within a month, they’ll revert to their old ways. Regrets for things we do are short-lived.

Normally, I study women’s decisions, but this is one finding that’s robust across genders. Most of us, men as well as women, regret the actions we fail to take longer and more intensely than the actions we take. And this finding isn’t special to the United States. We see the same pattern across a diverse range of cultures and social traditions, including in countries such as the UK, France, Japan, Russia, and China.

If we feel best about the actions we take, does that mean you should say yes to every opportunity? Of course not. Practically speaking, that’s impossible (and frankly, not enjoyable). But it’s worth paying attention to your big goals. If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do and a door swings open, pay attention to it. Your mind can generate a dozen possible regrets, but in the end, ignoring that open door might very well be the biggest.
